Types of Coated Screws

Hot-Dip Galvanized

Hot-dip galvanizing involves dipping steel fasteners in a bath of molten zinc, creating a uniform coating that provides excellent protection against corrosion. The process involves a metallurgical reaction between the iron in the steel and the molten zinc, resulting in a tightly bonded zinc-iron alloy coating with a pure zinc outer layer.

Mechanical Galvanized

Mechanical galvanizing is a room-temperature process that involves tumbling metal parts in a drum filled with zinc powder, glass beads, and corrosion-inhibiting chemicals. The glass beads peen the zinc onto the surface of the part, creating a durable coating. This process is suitable for small fasteners with fine threads that cannot be hot-dipped.

Quik Guard® Coated

Quik Guard® is a proprietary coating system developed by Simpson Strong-Tie. It consists of an electroplated zinc base layer with multiple organic top coats. The corrosion resistance of Quik Guard is equivalent to hot-dip galvanization in some exposures and non-marine environments.

Benefits of Coated Screws

  • Improved corrosion resistance.
  • Increased durability and lifespan.
  • Cost-effective alternative to stainless steel screws.
  • Available in a range of coating options and colors to suit different project requirements.
  • Suitable in a variety of applications and materials.

Common Uses

  • Decks, fencing and outdoor construction where extremely high corrosion resistance is not required.
  • Indoor furniture making and interior construction.
  • Applications where a lower-cost alternative to stainless steel screws is desired.
  • DIY projects, such as treehouses, play yards, or birdhouses.
  • Custom pallets, formwork and temporary applications where the lifespan of the project is limited.

When to Use Which Grade?

Hot-Dip Galvanized

  • For projects that require good corrosion resistance where conditions are not extreme.
  • Ideally suited as a coating to protect heavy bolts and spikes.
  • A good option where the screw will be in contact with pressure-treated lumber.

Quik Guard® Coated

  • In areas with moderate exposure to moisture and salt.
  • Due to the range of colors available, this option is very popular when installing composite decks.

Mechanical Galvanized

  • In areas with low to moderate exposure to moisture and salt.
  • For applications where the screw will be used in a dry or indoor environment.
  • This is a very budget friendly option.
